This year's awards
night included a formal meal in the club house for players, partners
families etc. Many thanks to Joe and Naomi for organising this change to
the usual format and in particular to Pumpkin for doing all of the
cooking on the night. Hopefully this will be a regular event in years to
come. On to the
awards themselves.....Joe took over as MC, and kicked off the
presentation of the 'negative' awards! Immediate surprise was expressed
that the person nominated to present the first award i.e. Wellsy was not
actually the winner! Wellsy was delighted to announce that despite every
effort on his part to amass the most number of ducks once again,
he had great pleasure in handing over the mantle to a rather surprising
recipient in James Stead.

Up next was the Bucket
Award for the most unbelievable drop of the season. Shag came up to
tell us about a wonderful day for cricket one June summer's day against
Long Marston when little good cricket was actually played!
Having previously taken an
excellent one handed at slip, this year's winner then proceeded to fail
to hold the simplest of looping catches at first slip that was witnessed
in amazement by far too many members of the committee to avoid winning
this award. To a chorus of 'I'm a Lumberjack' Dan Rollo came up
to receive the award.

To the more serious awards, for the 4th team
'playing' captain Neil Hale awarded the batting award (much to
his own personal disappointment!) to Kevin Brady who had managed
to be the top scorer despite only featuring in 10 games. Kevin then
dedicated his award to the dress sense of Dan Rollo.

Non playing skipper Anthony Levy then presented the
bowling award to Richard 'Cue Ball' Blaby for his solid
performances during the year that made him equal leading wicket taker.
Special mentions made of youngsters Harry White, Alex Callan and Bradley
Sayers who had all progressed significantly during the year as well as
thanks to Sweden bound Andy Gregory for his 20 wickets during just 6
performances.

For the 3rd team awards
skipper John Worley presented the batting award to seemingly
perennial award winner Geoff Williams for his mass of runs during
the year. John also praised Chris Knight for the runs scored before he
needed to watch rugby matches, Tony Pigden for his contributions in
limited performances and Michael Levy for moving from number 9 up to
number 4 as the season progressed.

Geoff then stayed up on stage to present the bowling
award to Richard Wells, regaling us with details of Wellsy's
player profile as well as the day he took 7 for 59 against Elstree
having told Geoff at the start of the day that he wasn't happy to be 10
wickets behind John Worley! Geoff also mentioned the fact that John
Worley had actually been the leading wicket taker during the season with
27 but just behind Richard in the averages.

Next came the presentation of the Vic Earwicker
Fileding Award that is traditionally presented to the taker of the
most catches - an award that Adam Pigden always complains is never given
to any wicketkeepers. Ben Wood presented the award congratulating Andy
Stokes, Tony Sayers and James Stead for their catching hauls, before
presenting the award to......Adam Pigden!

For the 2nd team Tony Pigden regaled us with a poem in
celebration of skipper Ben Wood's batting prowess and in
particular his late season century at Chalk Lane. This all came as
something of a surprise to Ben who had been expecting Scott Alexander to
win the award! Instead Ben came up to present the bowling award
to Chris Xavier for his total of 42 wickets. Special mention made
to youngsters Craig Hutchins, Joe Barker and Harry White for their
efforts late in the season as well as skipper Matt Hillier's
performances early in the season before his temporary return to
Australia.

The catch of the year award was presented by Joe
Clune, who told of an early season second team game where Mark Sayers
induced an edge that on most occasions would have just brushed the
fingers of the fielder. On this occasion however Matt Hillier at
second slip stuck out a hand and despite the ball being low and behind
him he held on to claim the spoils!
There then followed a
number of awards that were presented by the President Mike Pigden due in
part to the unavailability of key first team members. First off came the
1st XI awards. On the batting front both Chris Stead and Tony
Sayers were given plenty of credit for their totals of over 500 runs.
However the winner thanks to a haul of just short of 800 runs was
Declan O'Leary.
The bowling award was a close contest with a
number of players all securing in excess of 30 wickets apiece. The
President presented the award to Matt Stead for his consistent
fast bowling.

Next came the President's Eye award given to in
recognition of something special or comical witnessed by the President
during the season. There were some funny moments in the rain, some
steepling catches and the occasional loss of composure. However after
careful consideration the winner was Craig Hutchins for securing
(in your best Richie Benaud accent!) '2 in 2 against Tewin II' to secure
a last ball victory.
The President then gave
a vote of thanks to all those who had helped generally with the club
this season and particular the scorers. This gave him a good reason to
present Jessica Levy with her certificate for completing her
Level 1 scorer's course.

The President then announced that this year the
Saracens Herts League had decided (similar to Wisden) to award their
5 Cricketers of the Year. Each club had been asked to nominate
one player who had made a significant contribution for any league side
during the season and that ideally that person should also be someone
that had performed at a high level over a long period. The President
announced that he was delighted to have collected one of the inaugural
awards last Friday night at the League's Award Night on behalf of
Geoff Williams.

Geoff, as holder of the Club Player of the Year Award,
remained at the microphone to announce that this year's winner was Neil
Hale. A deserving award for all that Neil does around the club including
captaincy, social events, wine committee, discos etc. A deserving award
for a stalwart and unsung hero of the club.
