Under 11 Match Reports - 2006

U11 Playoff Monday 31 July

CCC 74 for 9 lost to Finchley 75 for 9 by 1 wicket

What a cruel game - Fosters struggled with the bat and never really got going, desperately missing the missing Nayam, and relied on a number of wides to push the total on. Special mention goes to the tailenders who took the score on from 55 for 8 to reach what manager Barend thought was 6 below what he thought was a reasonable target.

In response Finchley lost an early wicket but then looked in control until 2 catches behind by Will Smith off the bowling of Bradley turned the game around (sad though to see the petulance from both batsman and father after one of the dismissals). Wickets continued to fall including 2 wickets for Joe Sieff and 2 run outs, including a remarkable pick up and direct hit from skipper Bradley - all members of the Sayers clan claimed responsibility for his fielding!

When the 9th wicket fell with the score on 50, victory seemed inevitable. However much credit goes to the final 2 Finchley batsmen (one of whom was only 8) as they batted sensibly, saw the extras increase with some wide balls and took their runs when available. In the end the pressure told on the final Fosters bowlers and Finchley scraped home with 4 balls to spare.

An excellent effort though by the side to almost pull off a shock - genuine hope that this side can hold their own in the top division next season.

U11 League Sunday 23 July - Barend Velleman

CCC 151 for 3 beat Edmonton 60 all out by 91 runs

The Cockfosters under 11's joined their under 13 compatriots in winning their league. Needing a victory over third placed Edmonton, the team produced their best performance of the season in a resounding 91 run win. Captain Brad Sayers (42) and Nayam Patel (49) put on over 90 for the second wicket and with some excellent running between the wickets by George Uttley and Morgan Holmes, Cockfosters reached 151 for 3 off 20 overs.

The bowling and fielding did not suffer by comparison with four wickets for Nayam Patel and three for Jamal Faisal. Brad bowled superbly taking a wicket and hardly conceding a run, George Uttley was a model of accuracy and the fielding was exemplified by Liron Velleman who hit the stumps with a throw from the boundary (a cruel umpire denied the run out).

On to the play-offs!

U11 League Sunday 25 June

CCC 89 for 5 beat Potters Bar 86 for 7 by 5 wickets

A close fought win was achieved thanks to an excellent 31 form Nayan Patel (trying to keep up with his brother) together with another excellent effort in the field, which included a spell of 3 for 14 from Jamal Faisal, 1 for 12 from Bradley and 1 for 13 from Leron.

The Under 11s against all the odds, now lead their table with just 2 games to go!

U11 League Wednesday 21 June - Barend Velleman

CCC 74 for 4 beat Southgate 63 by 11 runs

U11 league champions achieve double against local rivals Southgate.

On a cold blustery midsummer's evening, Brad Sayers won the toss and elected to bat. Opening with Sam Langley, he guided Southgate to 23 off 7overs when Sam was bowled. Nayam Patel fell first ball, but by the middle of the 14th over the captain and Joe Sieff had taken the score to 45. Mr Sayers was needlessly run out for a top[ score of 22 (including 4 x 4s) leaving Joe to push things along with George Uttley. At 55 he took one heave too many and was bowled for 11, but 32 runs had been added while Joseph was at the crease. Finally, a highly intelligent and skillful partnership, full of well run singles, between George (8 not out) and Morgan Holmes (9 not out), took the score at 20 overs to 74 for 4.

Bradley and Nayam opened the bowling and despite 10 runs coming off the first two overs, wickets started to fall. Most of Cockfosters bowlers were wonderfully accurate with Nayam posting 3-1-7-2, Joe Sharpe 3-2-1-0, new young super leg spinner Harry Westfall 3-1-3-0, Jamal 2-1-6-2 and batting star Morgan with 2-1-1-1. Jamal's 6 runs consisted of a wide that went for 4.

Cockfosters fielding was excellent and a fine victory was achieved by 11 runs.

U11 League Friday 16 June

CCC 114 for 6 beat Edmonton 90 for 7 by 24 runs

Solid batting at the top of the order was capped by a wonderful display by Bradley Sayers who punished anything loose for a personal best score of 47. His downfall came in bizarre circumstances as, immediately following hitting another boundary to finish the previous over he somehow found himself facing the start of the next over - only to sky the first ball to the grateful keeper. The views of his mother at this point are not printable!

This was easily the U11s best effort with the bat and as a result Edmonton were always under pressure to keep up with the run rate against a team renowned for its strength in the bowling department. Edmonton were always behind the run rate........completed report to follow from someone who watched the finish!!

U11 League Wednesday 10 May - Barend Velleman

CCC 62 all out beat Southgate 60 by 2 runs

Another fantastic nail-biting win for our unbeaten U11 league champions of last season over our local rivals.

The start was anything but encouraging. Sam Langley started with a four, but with the score on seven, captain Brad Sayers (where have I heard that surname before?) played across the line and was bowled for a duck. Sam followed on the same score and despite some good shots by Nayan Patel, Cockfosters were soon 24 for 6 with only seven overs gone. And I thought that managing an under 11 side would be easy; thoughts of "Don't panic Mr Mannering flashed through my head".

Step up the younger Velleman. Liron joined Jamal Faisal at the crease with strict instructions to use up the overs and let the extras from the lesser Southgate bowlers mount up. The pair followed the plan to the letter putting on the highest stand of the match to take the score to 46 before Liron was done by a yorker. 22 runs; Jamal 1;  Liron 0; extras 21. A ninth wicket partnership of 12 between Morgan Holmes and Jeremy Nestor took us to 62 all out off 18 overs. Something to defend at least.

The Southgate openers strode confidently to the middle; two overs later, a fine maiden from captain Sayer and an explosive double wicket maiden by Nayan and the big 'S' were worried. 0-2. Nayan continued to bowl tightly and Liron's first maiden over was followed by Gabriel Navias conceding just a single. Six overs gone, Southgate 7-2. From that point, a further 56 to win off 13 overs was always going to be a tough call.

Eight were needed off the final over bowled by Gabriel. Two wickets in the first three balls left eight off three and the Southgate innings closed on 60, a two run victory. Nayan Patel 4-0-7-3, Gabrial Navias 3-0-7-2, Brad Sayers 4-1-10-1 and George Uttley 3-0-11-1 were backed up by excellent fielding and stunning catches by Jamal and Nayan.

U/11 MCA Cup Wednesday, 19 April - Geoff Williams

CCC 87 for 5 beat Brondesbury 77 for 7

Team: B. Sayers (Capt.), S. Langley, N. Patel, W. Smith (wk), R. Towler, J. Nestor, M. Holmes, S. Bennett, J. Green, O. Bates, M. Watford.

The first Colts match of the season saw Brondesbury win the toss and put Cockfosters into bat and first use of the re-laid pitch. Captain Bradley Sayers and Samuel Langley saw off the opening bowlers and put on a partnership of 17 in 6 overs before Brad was bowled.  The new pitch was playing well with even bounce - there was no sign of any balls rearing about the batsman's heads, much to the relief of our watching groundsman. Sam and Nayan Patel set about the bowling and both played some lovely shots through the covers. With excellent running between wickets they took the total to 67 from 15 overs. Nayan was caught for a well made 18 after which three quick wickets fell.  Sam continued to bat well and carried his bat for 15 not out in 20 overs.

Despite threatening rain clouds, Brondesbury began their chase and after a steady start Nayan bowled their opener with the score 14 after 6 overs. Brad changed his bowlers around in an effort to get a further breakthrough however Brondesbury made good  progress to 66 off 16 overs. A smart run out broke the partnership and Sam bowled the incoming batsman to slow down the batting side. The 18th over turned the match on its head when left-arm bowler Sam Bennet took 3 wickets in 4 balls all bowled.  His hat-trick ball just missed the leg stump by a whisker. The final overs bowled by Brad and Nayan kept the runs down and Cockfosters had an excellent win.

The U/11s progress to the next round of the Cup to be played between the 14th May and 2nd June.
