Under 13 Match Reports - 2007

U13 League - Cockfosters 70 all out lost to Winchmore Hill 73 for 7 by 3 wickets

Another close fought defeat showed that this side have a lot of potential and some more wins would surely have come if a few players had clicked on the same day. This time it was the turn of Michael and Sachin to take the batting and bowling honours, and with just a little more support a surprise victory would have been achieved.

Cockfosters scored just 43 runs from the bat in their 20 overs and Michael was to carry his bat all through for 25, finding the fielders with monotonous regularity but not giving his wicket away cheaply as he might have done earlier in the season. Wickets though fell regularly at the other end on a soft Chalk Lane pitch and in the end the side did well to reach 70.

In reply Winchmore Hill made a good start off of openers Bradley and Nayan and the opposition coach was so confident that he changed the batting order to give lesser players a chance......a couple of overs from Sachin (who was well backed up at the other end by Alex) soon saw the cockiness leave Winchmore Hill. Sachin took a remarkable 5 for 13 as a middle order collapse ensued.

It wasn't quite enough though and Winchmore Hill made it home with 2 overs and 3 wickets to spare.

U13 League - Barnet 105 for 8 beat Cockfosters 72 all out by 33 runs

Another game of what might have been as yet another excellent display in the field to keep Barnet down to what looked potentially a below par score, was again undone by a poor top order batting display.

Barnet struggled to set a target thanks to some generally good bowling and some excellent fielding and 3 run outs including 2 direct hits. The score of 105 for 8 looked like one that Cockfosters ought to chase down despite missing the injured Nayan Patel.

However the reply got off to the worst possible start as both openers were run out - Although Bradley's shot skywards towards fine leg was poor, Chris's effort to run out the single was worse. Then Bradley turned blind for a second run to the bowlers end and was also well short of his ground. Joe Sieff looked promising before being falling to a very good catch in the deep and then Harry played all around one. Michael, down to number 4 then tickled one behind down the leg side and the innings was in tatters at 23 for 5.

The saving grace for the side was the performance of Sachin Mehta who then carried the lower order with a fine made 29, which included a partnership of 28 with young D Vanning who was making his debut start. Another defeat but this side is not that far away from competing with the best sides in this top division.

U13 League - Winchmore Hill 92 for 7 beat Cockfosters 57 all out by 35 runs

A spirited and competent bowling and fielding display gave Cockfosters every chance against a confident Winchmore Hill side. Put in to bat Winchmore Hill made a pacy start scoring at more than 5 an over until the opening bowlers were replaced by Joe Sieff and Harry White - both managed to peg back the run rate and also take a wicket each.

Better was to come as Alex Bassil took 3 for 10 and Sachin Mehta bowled a fine spell of 1 for 6 both from 3 overs. Decisively skipper Michael Levy returned to Bradley Sayers and Nayan Patel for the final 2 overs, when leaving Sachin and Alex to finish the innings might have been the better choice. Those 2 overs were to yield 23 runs, as the Winchmore Hill batsmen enjoyed the quicker bowling. Nonetheless it was a good effort in the field with 3 catches held and lots of encouragement.

The reply got off to the worst possible start as Michael was adjudged caught behind first ball (join the club son - although he insists he never touched it) and Chris Cattlin also fell without scoring next over.

Jack Rice and Nayan Patel battled through the next few overs but by this time the run rate was getting tricky and soon wickets fell in pursuit of those runs. Joe Sieff top scored down the order with 13 and Cockfosters ended up all out for 57 runs.

U13 League - Mill Hill Village 106 for 6 beat Cockfosters 48 all out by 58 runs

Fresh from their victory over Barnet the Fosters side entered this game with confidence, although a couple of players light due to school cricket games.

In the end though a good Mill Hill Village side came out on top mainly thanks to a good batting display from their top order, which was capped by their no.4 bat scoring 35 from just 20 deliveries at a time when it looked like another score of 80 would be chased. Only late wickets from Alex Bassil (2 for 16, inc 2 wickets in 2 balls) and Liron Velleman (2 for 22) brought a check to the free scoring.

In reply it was always going to be difficult to chase down this target given the wet outfield and green pitch. Michael Levy soon went when trying to push the scoring rate on and Chris Cattlin later went for 7 trying to to do the same thing. Nayan Patel batted really well for a top score 21 before he again was run out - this time by a direct hit when he and Bradley were rightly trying to run everything. Bradley fell next over and with that any real chance of getting close to the target was over. Eventually all out for 48, but hopefully lessons learnt for the next encounter.

U13 League - Barnet 84 for 6 lost to Cockfosters 87 for 2 by 8 wickets

A first victory over Barnet and one that was completely deserved thanks to an excellent all round performance with ball, bat and in the field.

Michael unusually chose to insert the opposition when he won the toss, and despite no early breakthroughs, both Bradley and Nayan bowled their opening overs very economically. The introduction of Joseph and Sachin led to an increase in the scoring rate and Barnet's good opening bats were 47 from 10 overs.

At this point Harry and Jack were introduced in to the attack and this paid immediate dividends - first Harry bowled a slower ball that completely foxed the Barnet batsman into hitting the ball up in the air, with Harry taking a good return catch. Then Jack induced the other opener down the pitch and he was bowled. Nevertheless, with the score on 79 for 2 with 4 overs to go things looked touch and go until the late introduction of Liron, who ended up with 3 wickets for just 2 runs from his 2 overs, and final tidy overs from Bradley and Nayan meant that Barnet reached just 84 for 6.

In response the Cockfosters openers of Chris and Michael got off to a flying start thanks a quick shower of wides and byes. Chris then fell for 1 with the score on 17, but by then the sting had been taken out of the Barnet attack and first Nayan with 16 (unluckily run out thanks to the aid of the long grass stopping a certain Michael 4) and then Bradley with 23 not out helped Michael (24 not out) easily guide Cockfosters home with 5 overs to spare.

U/13 Cup Wednesday 18 April
-  Cockfosters lost by 5 wickets

A disappointing start from Cockfosters as simply did not make enough runs after deciding to bat first against Hornsey. Michael and Bradley fresh from their Middlesex District Coaching both fell cheaply and despite a valiant effort from Chris Cattlin who made 19 and held the innings together a total below 70 was never likely to be enough.

Unfortunately Hornsey's opening batsman made a lot of runs while 5 wickets tumbled at the other end. All to no avail then and another disappointing cup defeat.
