CRICKET WEEK - GUIDE AND OPPONENTS |
The following is a guide to cricket
week that we hope will prove useful to players and non players old and new. Cricket week at Cockfosters is one of the
oldest surviving cricket weeks in the area. It is a great week of competitive
but friendly cricket and also a great source of revenue for the club. Games on
each day begin at 11.30am and players need to arrive at the club no later than
10.30am. There is a sit down lunch provided each day, thanks to a dedicated
staff in the kitchen.
Cricket week is a tradition well worth being part of – come ready to
enjoy good cricket and a great
social atmosphere. Bring full wallets and be ready to spend big.
MONDAY - PRESIDENT'S DAY
President’s day is the opening event
of cricket week. It is the most formal day of the five and players are
asked to turn up for the game wearing a collar and tie. Traditionally dress in the
evening is smarter than usual.
The President chooses an
Invitation XI
often made up of old players as well as prominent players from local
clubs.
TUESDAY - MALCONTENTS
Malcontents are a local touring side.
This is a regular Tuesday fixture for Cricket Week and is now a hotly
fought contest for the “Medway Ashes” – all that remains of the once
infamous hat worn by Ian Medway.
Traditionally a heavy after game night
in the bar and look out for the Port!
WEDNESDAY - BUNTINGFORD
With
Duncan Elder's move to Cockfosters a couple of years ago we are no
longer able to welcome the Duncan Elder XI. After being replaced by a
team from Setanta Sports last year, this year we welcome Buntingford to
Chalk Lane for the first time.
THURSDAY - BOB COLE'S XI
Bob Cole is a former President of
Southgate cricket club. He brings an invitation XI on the penultimate day
of the week. Look out this can be one of the toughest games of the
week.
FRIDAY - ROVING REPORTERS
Roving Reporters are the traditional
end of the week fixture. They are a local touring side and provide a good
end to the week. Friday is traditionally a big day at the club with a good
crowd of spectators and is a great day to get the family along. What
better time to finish work early!
The week closes with a disco, players
of course being mindful of Saturday league games. |
